I think it’s a symbolic reference “9” symbolically relates to perfect harmony or couple…the 9th finger is where you wear a wedding ring. The song lyrics to me sounds like the person died or divorced or left painfully. It talks about the pain of loneliness …I contemplated the addict part and I felt it references drug use to help with the hole left in the heart
